Äthat South Shore taxpayers/ratepayers spent over $2 Million to throw away paper last year? more Äthat recycling 2 bags of paper a week keeps 9 trees in the forest, saves 120 gallons of fuel, and keeps 1.5 tons of carbon dioxide out of the air each year? Äthat you do NOT need to remove staples, paper clips, tape, spirals or windows from your paper prior to recycling? more Äthat plastic is derived from crude oil? Making bottles to meet Americans’ demand for bottled water requires more than 1.5 million barrels of oil annually, enough to fuel some 100,000 U.S. cars for a year. Worldwide, some 2.7 million tons of plastic are used to bottle water each year. According to the Container Recycling Institute, 86 percent of plastic water bottles used in the United States become litter or trash.
